QAPLO – Clinical Psychologist at the Regional Mental Hospital (RSJD) Atma Husada Mahakam, East Kalimantan, Raden Roro Rani Meita Pratiwi, explains that anxiety in dealing with workplace dynamics must be managed properly to maintain both mental health and productivity. According to Rani, anxiety in the workplace is generally triggered by uncertainty experienced by employees, ranging from fear of job loss, changes in company policies, to increasing economic pressure. “Anxiety is often triggered by uncertainty, such as fear that job positions are not secure, changes in regulations, or economic pressure,” Rani said in Samarinda on Saturday. She explained that in addition to work-related factors, anxiety can also be caused by monotonous routines, lack of appreciation in the workplace, and personal issues that are carried into the work environment. Rani reminded workers to be alert when anxiety starts affecting mental condition. Signs may include frequent fatigue, loss of focus, boredom, and increased emotional sensitivity when interacting with colleagues. “When someone becomes easily irritated or overly sensitive to their surroundings, it can be a sign of mental exhaustion,” she explained. She emphasized that anxiety is different from ordinary stress. Stress usually has a clear cause and disappears once the issue is resolved, while anxiety is more related to negative thoughts about uncertain future events that may not even happen. To reduce anxiety, Rani suggests that workers should not force themselves to solve all problems at once. Focusing on the task at hand is considered more effective in maintaining emotional stability. In addition, when panic arises, workers are advised to slow down their movements and regulate their breathing gradually to reduce heart rate and bodily tension. “Awareness to stay focused on the present condition is very important. Excessive worry about uncertain things will only take away happiness,” she said. Rani also recommends that people regularly engage in light physical activity such as walking. According to her, light exercise helps the body produce happiness hormones and serves as a healthy way to refresh the mind. In the workplace, she believes employees should be open to receiving criticism and quickly correct mistakes, rather than only apologizing without real improvement. Rani added that resilience and continuous self-development are key factors in maintaining mental health amid the uncertainties of life and the modern work environment.
